Episode 2219: Donald Trump

election misinformation immigration anti-trans rhetoric climate misinformation tariffs crowd sizes

Overview

On October 25, 2024, Joe Rogan hosted former President Donald Trump for a nearly three-hour interview that became one of the longest interviews Trump has done as a presidential candidate. The interview was notable for containing at least 32 documented false claims spanning topics including the 2020 election, immigration, transgender children, tariffs, energy policy, and Trump’s record in office. Many of these false claims had been debunked months or even years ago, yet were presented without meaningful challenge or fact-checking from Rogan.

Key Issues

2020 Election Lies

Trump repeated his thoroughly debunked claim that he won the 2020 election, falsely stating “I won that second election so easy.” In reality, Trump lost to Joe Biden, who defeated him 306-232 in the Electoral College and earned over 7 million more popular votes. This claim has been rejected by courts across the country, Trump’s own Department of Homeland Security called it “the most secure election in American history,” and numerous recounts and audits confirmed Biden’s victory.

Rogan did briefly press Trump on whether he would ever present evidence for his stolen election claims, but ultimately allowed the misinformation to stand without adequate pushback.

Anti-Trans Misinformation About Schools

Trump revived his completely false claim that schools are secretly sending children for gender-affirming surgeries without parental consent, telling Rogan: “the transgender operations: where they’re allowed to take your child when he goes to school and turn him into a male — to a female — without parental consent.”

This claim is entirely false. There is no evidence that schools in any part of the United States have sent children for gender-affirming surgeries without their parents’ approval, or performed such surgeries on site. None of this is “allowed” anywhere in the country. Even in states where gender-affirming surgery is legal for people under age 18, parental consent is required before a minor can undergo such a procedure.

Dr. Laura Taylor, medical director of the gender-affirming care program at the University of Southern California, confirmed: “Any gender-affirming medical care or surgical care would legally require the consent of (both) parents/legal guardians and assent of an adolescent under 18.”

Trump’s campaign and four conservative groups contacted by CNN in September were unable to provide any evidence for this claim. PolitiFact rated this claim “Pants on Fire,” and multiple fact-checkers including Snopes have debunked it.

Immigration Misinformation

Murderers Claim: Trump claimed “we had 13,099 murderers dropped in our country over the last three years.” This is false. As the Department of Homeland Security and independent experts confirmed, that official figure refers to immigrants with homicide convictions in the US today who entered the country over decades, including during Trump’s own administration, not over the past three years or specifically under Biden.

Border Crossing Numbers: Trump claimed that at least “21 million” people have illegally crossed the border during the Biden administration. Through September 2024, the country had recorded under 11 million nationwide “encounters” with migrants during the Biden administration, including millions who were rapidly expelled from the country. Even adding in estimated “gotaways” (roughly 2 million according to House Republicans), there is no way the total reaches “21 million.”

Harris “Border Czar” Claim: Trump claimed Vice President Kamala Harris was “in charge of the border.” This is false. President Biden gave Harris a more limited immigration-related assignment in 2021, asking her to lead diplomacy with El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras to address root causes of migration. She was never given operational control of border security.

Tariff Misinformation

Who Pays Tariffs: Trump repeated his frequent false claim that through tariffs “I took in hundreds of billions of dollars from China.” This fundamentally misrepresents how tariffs work. US importers make the tariff payments, not China, and study after study has found that Americans bore the overwhelming majority of the cost of Trump’s tariffs on China.

Historical Tariffs: Trump falsely claimed that no previous president had imposed tariffs on Chinese imports, saying “Nobody took in 10 cents, not one other president.” In reality, the US was generating billions per year in revenue from tariffs on Chinese imports before Trump took office. In fact, the US has had tariffs on Chinese imports since 1789.

Energy and Environmental Claims

LNG Facility Claim: Trump falsely claimed that he “instantly” secured a key environmental permit for a massive liquefied natural gas facility in Louisiana after the initiative had been on hold “for 14 years.” In reality, this facility was granted its key permits under the Obama administration, and its construction also began under Obama.

Wind and Whales: Trump made unfounded claims about offshore wind turbines affecting whales, saying windmill vibrations drive whales “freaking crazy” and cause them to wash up on shore. He stated “I want to be a whale psychiatrist.” There is no scientific evidence supporting these claims about wind turbines causing whale deaths.

Crowd Size Fabrications

Las Vegas Rally: Trump claimed there were “29,000 people” at his Las Vegas event the night prior. The arena where his Thursday night rally took place has a capacity under 19,000.

McDonald’s Event: Trump falsely claimed there were “28,000 people sitting around” the McDonald’s in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where he held a publicity event. While videos show there was a substantial pro-Trump crowd, it obviously didn’t approach 28,000 people.

Fact-Checks and Rebuttals

CNN’s Daniel Dale conducted a comprehensive fact-check and documented at least 32 false claims during the interview. NBC News, PolitiFact, Snopes, and multiple other fact-checking organizations also debunked numerous claims from this episode.

On the Transgender School Claims:

  • Multiple medical experts confirmed parental consent is legally required for any gender-affirming medical or surgical care for minors
  • No conservative groups could provide evidence for Trump’s claims
  • All major fact-checkers rated this claim as completely false

On Immigration:

  • Department of Homeland Security clarified the 13,099 figure represents convictions over decades, not three years
  • Official encounter statistics show under 11 million total encounters (not unique individuals)
  • Harris was assigned diplomatic work on root causes, not border security operations

On Tariffs:

  • Economic studies consistently show American consumers and businesses pay tariff costs
  • Historical records show continuous tariff revenue from China dating back to 1789
  • Multiple economists have explained that tariffs function as taxes on imports, paid by importers

On the 2020 Election:

  • Biden won 306 electoral votes to Trump’s 232
  • Over 60 court cases challenging the results were dismissed
  • Trump’s own DHS declared it the most secure election in American history
  • Multiple audits and recounts confirmed Biden’s victory

Conclusion

Episode 2219 represents a significant failure of Joe Rogan’s platform to challenge misinformation when hosting a major political figure. While Rogan did occasionally push back on some claims, particularly regarding the 2020 election, he largely allowed Trump to repeat debunked claims without meaningful fact-checking or correction.

The episode is particularly concerning because it was released just days before the 2024 presidential election, giving Trump a massive platform (The Joe Rogan Experience is one of the most popular podcasts in the world) to spread election misinformation, anti-trans rhetoric, and falsehoods about immigration, tariffs, and his own record.

The anti-trans claims about schools are especially harmful, as they fuel moral panic about transgender children and gender-affirming care despite being completely fabricated. The election lies continue to undermine public faith in democratic institutions. The immigration misinformation distorts public understanding of border policy and demographics.

When platforming political candidates, particularly during an election season, podcast hosts have a responsibility to fact-check claims and provide context for their audiences. This episode failed that responsibility, allowing 32+ documented false claims to be broadcast to millions of listeners without adequate challenge or correction.
