The Claims
1. Hydroxychloroquine / Chloroquine Hype
Pool framed mainstream coverage of hydroxychloroquine as politically motivated bias against Trump, arguing the press unfairly attacked Trump’s “it might work, it might not” comments while ignoring Andrew Cuomo announcing trials.
Paraphrased: The press ran with “Trump recommends untested dangerous drug” while giving Cuomo a pass for announcing the same trials.
What the evidence says:

The “media bias” framing obscured the actual story: a sitting president promoting an unproven drug from the podium, against the advice of his own health officials.
2. Lockdowns Dismissed Without Nuance
Pool and Rogan dwelled on the economic costs of shutdowns and the risk of “permanent” government overreach, without commensurate discussion of what unmitigated spread would have looked like in April 2020 — pre-vaccine, pre-treatment, and with hospitals already overwhelmed in NYC and Lombardy.

Critique of lockdown policy is legitimate. Two non-experts handwaving it as authoritarianism without engaging the counterfactual is not.
3. Bill Gates / Vaccine Conspiracy Floating
The conversation drifted into Bill Gates’ alleged connections to Epstein and conspiracy-adjacent territory regarding vaccines, the kind of “just asking questions” content that seeded years of anti-vaccine narratives among Rogan’s audience.
What the evidence says:

4. “China Lied” Framing as Anti-WHO Wedge
Pool repeatedly framed the WHO as compromised by China, and social media platforms enforcing WHO guidance as censorship.
While China’s early information suppression is well-documented and a legitimate story, Pool used it as a wedge to delegitimize all public health guidance — at the moment when consistent messaging on masking, distancing, and isolation was most needed.
Joe Rogan’s Role
This is a textbook example of Rogan as enabler, not interviewer:
- No pushback on hydroxychloroquine claims, despite no clinical evidence at the time of recording.
- Joined in speculating about lockdowns and vaccine timelines without inviting an epidemiologist for balance.
- Amplified the “media is lying about the pandemic” frame to his then-massive audience weeks before the Spotify deal.
- Platformed a non-credentialed commentator as a serious voice on a public-health emergency.
Rogan would go on to repeat this pattern throughout 2020-2021 with Bret Weinstein, Robert Malone, Pierre Kory, and others — but episode 1465 is an early data point in the trajectory.
Why It Matters
In April 2020, accurate health information was a matter of life and death. Rogan’s audience — millions strong, skewing male and politically heterodox — was exactly the demographic that later showed the lowest vaccine uptake and highest excess mortality. NBER 2022
